2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L engine options

The 2021 Grand Cherokee L comes with two available engines. Standard throughout the lineup is a 290-horsepower 3.6L V6 that offers 257 lb-ft of torque. However, if you’re the type who needs more power than that, you’re in luck. The 5.7L V8 is where you’ll find 357 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque. The TorqueFlite 8-speed automatic employed by the Grand Cherokee L changes to suit the driver’s needs based on torque changes, throttle position, temperature, and more with an on-the-fly shift map changing.

Grand Cherokee L drivetrain options

Off-road capability is practically synonymous with Jeep. The Grand Cherokee L is a prime example of that, with the availability of the three most capable 4×4 systems Jeep has to offer. Quadra-Trac I provides full-time 4×4 traction with 48% of the engine torque going to the front axle and 52% going to the rear axle through a single-speed transfer case. The 4×4 system is always engaged without the driver needing to push a button or pull a lever. Quadra-Trac II is also available and employs a two-speed transfer case. This system detects a loss of traction with input from a network of sensors and will automatically re-route up to 100% of available engine torque to the axle with the most traction. Meanwhile, the Active 4-Low mode locks the front and rear driveshafts for low-speed power, towing capability, and rock crawling control. Lastly, Quadra-Drive II is another full-time 4×4 system, meaning four-wheel drive is always active. The electronic limited-slip rear differential allows the Quadra-Drive II to route up to 100% of available engine torque to a single rear wheel to regain traction.

Grand Cherokee L Selec-Terrain

Jeep’s Selec-Terrain traction management system has been putting drivers in control of their vehicle’s off-road capability for years now. Selec-Terrain is standard on all 4×4 Grand Cherokee L variants with Auto, Sport, Snow, and Sand/Mud modes. Auto allows the vehicle to sense road conditions and automatically makes the necessary adjustments to remain in control. Sport mode optimizes the throttle control and transmission shift points to provide better performance and fuel economy for on-road fun. Snow mode adjusts the 4×4 and traction control systems to limit wheel slippage and keep drivers on the road even in deep snow. Sand/Mud mode acts similarly and counteracts slippage by adjusting the 4×4 system and quickly redistributing torque. Lastly, Grand Cherokee L models equipped with Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II add Rock mode to the Selec-Terrain rotary dial. Rock mode shifts the transfer case into 4-Low for low-speed crawling control. Meanwhile, the transmission, throttle, and differentials synchronize for better off-road handling.

Grand Cherokee L Quadra-Lift

Quadra-Lift air suspension has been used for the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk trim and is used to aid in the Grand Cherokee L’s off-road prowess. The Quadra-Lift system comes with five adjustable height settings and coordinates with the Selec-Terrain dial. The Grand Cherokee L’s Normal Ride Height, or NRH, is 8.3 inches. When Aero mode is activated, the air springs will lower to 7.4-inches of ground clearance for better aerodynamics. Aero mode is automatically engaged when the Selec-Terrain dial is set to Sport. Off-Road 1 raises the air springs to 9.9 inches of ground clearance, providing optimal ground clearance on uneven surfaces. Off-Road 1 is activated when the Selec-Terrain is set to Snow or Sand/Mud modes. Meanwhile, Off-Road 2 raises the ground clearance to the maximum height of 10.9 inches, giving the Grand Cherokee L the ability to crawl over boulders and logs. Off-Road 2 is activated when Rock mode is set on the Selec-Terrain dial. Lastly, Park mode lowers the suspension to just 6.4-inches of ground clearance allowing all passengers to enter and exit with ease.
