How Jeep Electrifies the 4xe Wrangler

It wasn’t too long ago that you could get a Jeep Wrangler with any engine you wanted… as long as it was a V6. (Sorry, that was an attempt at automotive humor.) Today, however, Jeep shoppers have an array of engines to choose from. New owners can order their Wranglers with a turbocharged four-cylinder, a diesel V6, a fire-breathing SRT 6.4-liter V8, or an environmentally-sensitive Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV). That’s right, Jeep has gone electric with its new 4xe PHEV hybrid drivetrain. Let’s look at how the Wrangler’s latest powertrain option works.

How does the 4xe drivetrain operate?

The Jeep Wrangler 4xe’s powertrain is similar to the powertrain in other Wranglers. Like those, the 4xe has an engine up front, in this case, Jeep’s 2.0-litre turbocharged four. And, like the others, the engine sends power to the transmission and then on down to the transfer case. The transfer case then splits the power between Dana axles, front and rear, and from there, straight to the tires. This all seems rather conventional, doesn’t it? Well, a few additional components are added.

Wild guess, are the additional items electric motors?

Yes, two of them to be exact. The first one is built into the 8-speed automatic transmission and the other is attached directly to the inline-4 engine.
The front motor is the more interesting of the pair as it performs two functions. First, it can be driven by the engine to generate electricity, similar to the way that a conventional alternator works. Second, It can operate as a powerful electric motor to apply additional power directly to the drivetrain when needed.
The second electric motor, the one within the transmission replaces the torque converter and can apply further power to the driveline when needed. Output from the two motors and inline-4 gasoline engine are managed by a sophisticated control system that ensures the multiple motor powertrain operate seamlessly together.

Where are the batteries stored on the 4xe Wrangler?

The battery packs are located under the rear seat of the vehicle where they are protected from the elements. It should be noted that they are substantial in size because part of the battery’s storage capacity is self-recharging, allowing the battery to refill itself partially when the vehicle is in operation. The majority of the battery capacity, however, is designed to store electricity for full-electric propulsion.
