How is the 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe powered?
Hybrid powertrains combine the power of a combustion engine with electric generators powered by a rechargeable battery pack. The Grand Cherokee 4xe employs two electric generators powered by a 400-volt electric vehicle battery pack. One of the generators takes the place of the traditional alternator while the other is in the transmission in place of the torque converter. This EV system is paired with a 2.0L turbocharged I-4 engine. This offers drivers up to a gas equivalent of 56 miles per gallon, 25 miles of fully-electric driving, and up to 440 miles of total driving range. The 4xe powertrain gives the Grand Cherokee 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. Clearly, power was not lost in Jeep’s pursuit of fuel efficiency. The engine is mated to the trusted TorqueFlite 8-speed automatic transmission that powers all four wheels with Jeep’s highly praised Quadra-Trac II 4×4 system. To give you an idea of just how capable the 4xe system is, let us note that the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe conquered the daunting Rubicon Trail in electric mode to earn Jeep’s Trail Rated badge!
What are the E-Selec buttons?
Jeep wanted drivers to be able to control the PHEV system, so they created the E-Selec buttons. These buttons, found to the left of the steering wheel on the dashboard, include E-Save, Electric, and Hybrid. The system defaults to hybrid, which uses a mixture of gas and electric power. Electric power is used while coasting and idling, while gas is used when more pressure is applied to the gas pedal. E-Save mode, which will automatically engage when the battery loses its charge, can also be selected to preserve the battery power for a later time and recharge it through regenerative braking. Lastly, Electric mode can be chosen to provide drivers with zero emissions, nearly silent driving as long as the battery has at least 1% of life remaining.
How is the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe charged?
PHEV stands for Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle. So, as you probably guessed, the Grand Cherokee 4xe is mainly charged by a cord. All PHEV Grand Cherokee’s come with a Level 1 EV charging cable to fully charge the battery pack in about 12 hours. However, a Level 2 charger is available for purchase to provide a full charge in just two hours. Jeep has also started placing Jeep 4xe charging stations at the trailheads of the Jeep Badge of Honor trails. The 4xe also charges itself on the go. With a process called brake regeneration, the battery recharges while the vehicle is slowing down to maintain or increase the state of its charge. The Grand Cherokee 4xe also has a Max Regen setting which makes the brake regeneration calibration more assertive by beginning the brake regen process as soon as the driver completely lets off the gas pedal and continues to send energy back to the battery until the gas pedal is pressed again. Not only does this send more power back to the battery than regular regenerative braking, but it also brings the car to a stop faster.
